The 2014 World Cup is over, and while Germany is celebrating it’s victory, social media gurus have another reason to celebrate. It’s now the biggest social event in Web history.
Sunday’s final match between Germany and Argentina tallied 288 million Facebook interactions by 88 million users. Over on Twitter, users shared more than 618,000 tweets per minute, a new record. And that was just the final match!
The month-long tournament broke records across the board. In the first week alone — June 12-18 — the tournament saw 459 million Facebook interactions. That’s more than this year’s Super Bowl, Academy Awards and the Sochi Winter Olympics combined. And the official FIFA app was downloaded a staggering 28 million times, becoming the most successful sports app ever.
So what does that mean for your business? It means opportunity to draw new eyes to your Facebook and Twitter pages. Restaurants saw a huge spike in business by offering World Cup specials and viewing parties on their social media channels. Sporting goods stores gained hundreds of followers giving away jerseys from top players.
And it’s not just businesses that have a tie-in to sports that benefit. Insurance agents polled their clients on their picks to win, and saw spikes in engagement. An autobody paint shop posted pictures of paint jobs they had done in different team colors. Nearly every kind of business can get in on the action. But you have to be social and stay current to do it. Need some help? That’s why we’re here.
